Ford to Shut Plant

LEAD: The Ford Motor Company said it would shut its assembly plant in Lorain, Ohio, next week, idling about 2,700 hourly workers. The closing results from slow sales of the Thunderbird and Cougar models assembled at the plant, which was also closed for four of the first six weeks of 1990. A market analyst at Ford said that sales of full-sized specialty cars like Thunderbird and Cougar ''have been considerably weaker this year than the car market in general.
